Recap: Greenwood, Henrique's Brace Give OM Win Over Brest

The Roberto De Zerbi era and youth movement that Olympique de Marseille are ushering in this 2024-25 Ligue 1 season is off to a good start following their 5-1 road win over Stade Brestois on Saturday at Stade Francis Le Blé.

While Brest recorded seven total shots in the first 45 minutes, OM, who only registered three total shots, found the back of the net on three occasions. Former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood opened the scoring with a goal in the third minute off an assist from Amine Harit.

Despite conceding an early goal, Éric Roy and his team did have an opportunity to tie the contest minutes later. Brest was awarded a penalty kick following a VAR review, but Romain Del Castillo missed the shot after Gerónimo Rulli made the save, and the chance to tie the game was lost.

Marseille would make Brest pay for missing out on their scoring chance as Luis Henrique scored in the 26th minute off an assist from Harit to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, Greenwood would score in the 31st minute to record his brace in the first half and give Marseille a 3-0 advantage.

Brest responded right before halftime as Mahdi Camara provided the goal to give the home side positive momentum. Les Pirates faced a two disadvantage heading into the second half, but rather than close the gap, the away side would widen it more.

Three minutes into the second half, Henrique would register his brace with a goal in the 48th minute as Brest couldn't stop the Brazilian or Greenwood. OM would receive a penalty kick chance midway through the final 45 minutes, and newcomer Elye Wahi would convert the opportunity in the 68th minute to give Marseille a 5-1 lead, resulting in a convincing victory.

OM will be counting on several young who are 25 and younger and if the first game is an indicator, this campaign looks promising for De Zerbi. Les Phocéens will look to carry this momentum into their first home match of the season when they host Stade de Reims next Sunday.

As for Brest, they'll look to put this loss behind them when they travel to Stade Bollaert-Delelis to face RC Lens.
