Copa América Recap: Colombia and Uruguay Advance to Semifinals

The quarterfinals are all done at the 2024 Copa América, with Colombia and Uruguay advancing on Saturday. Did you miss any of the action? Here's a recap.

Colombia 5-0 Panama

Néstor Lorenzo and his team counted on former AS Monaco standout James Rodríguez, while Panama had Olympique de Marseille's Michael Amir Murillo. The Colombian veteran would be the star of the match, recording two assists and a goal in the first half as Los Cafeteros went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

The situation worsened for Panama as Colombia registered two more goals, courtesy of Richard Ríos and Miguel Borja, in the second half for a 5-0 win. Colombia's unbeaten streak is now 27 matches as they cruise to the semifinals, riding an impressive run.

Brazil 0-0 Uruguay (4-2 on penalties)

Brazil-Uruguay was the marquee matchup of the Copa América quarterfinals as a heavyweight in South American football would be eliminated. Manager Marcelo Bielsa counted on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte while the Brazilians had Marquinhos along with former Olympique Lyonnais stars Lucas Paquetá and Bruno Guimarães.

It was a scoreless deadlock after 90 minutes and the match went to a penalty kick shootout. Brazil would miss two shots while Uruguay failed to convert one shot, so the entire game rested on the shoulders of Ugarte. The PSG star needed to beat Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker to send the Uruguayans to the semifinal.

Ugarte fooled Alisson with his shot and scored the clinching goal in the shootout as Uruguay will face Colombia in the semifinals on Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
