The Breton club have announced the double-signing of Rongier and Merlin on two permanent deals.

Stade Rennais have today announced the permanent signing of Olympique de Marseille defender and France U21 international Quentin Merlin, completing a double-deal after the Breton club announced last night that they had also signed Marseille midfielder Valentin Rongier.

Both Rongier and Merlin know the West of France well, having both come through the FC Nantes academy as youth players and representing (and even captaining) the rivals of Rennes in the past. But now the pair will be moving to the capital of Brittany to join Habib Beye's side for the 2025-2026 season.

Marseille gave a heartfelt goodbye to Rongier, who joined Marseille in September 2019 and racked up 200 appearances over six seasons at the Vélodrome. The Frenchman wore the armband for Les Olympiens and was respected as "An exemplary teammate and positive captain, who left his mark on the club," as written by Marseille with a post on social media.

"Valentin fits the profile we were looking for in a midfielder perfectly; he ticks all the boxes," said Rennes sporting director Loïc Désiré last night. "The opportunity arose and we seized it. He is a significant addition to the team, a true leader who will fit in well with the style of play promoted by Habib and his staff. His experience and character will be valuable assets in supporting our young players."

Quentin Merlin joined Marseille back in January 2024 and has managed 46 matches with the club, featuring in the UEFA Europa League and helping the club get back to the UEFA Champions League last season. He has also captained France's U21 side at the international level.

"We were looking for a talented and reliable left-back. With Quentin Merlin, we are confirming the arrival of an excellent French prospect to strengthen our defensive base," said Rennes CEO Arnaud Pouille. "In addition to his undeniable sporting qualities, Quentin is a very good teammate in the dressing room, focused on others. He is a major asset for SRFC."
