Former AS Saint-´Étienne star Mathis Amougou is back in Ligue 1 McDonald's after joining RC Strasbourg from Chelsea -- learn more about the young midfielder in our latest "One To Watch"
Still just 19, Amougou is, like so many young players to have emerged in Ligue 1 McDonald's of late, a product of the Paris suburbs. Growing up in Le Blanc-Mensil -- the same small town that produced Moussa Sissoko and Raphaël Guerreiro, he played at amateur level for Torcy, while also being a part of the region's famous Clairefontaine academy. Even at a young age, moving through Clairefontaine and playing with the academy at Sainté, where he moved at the age of 15, Amougou's humble approach was winning plaudits.
Jean-Luc Vannucchi, the former coach of France's U-17, was consistently impressed with his midfield charge, saying, "He's not a guy who really shows off, at least not with us. I know he's integrated very well into the squad. He's never late but never too early (laughs). He's a good guy, very involved in training, respectful. There's zero problems with Mathis."

Having impressed with France as a box-to-box midfielder, Amougou picked up that mantle in impressive fashion with the first team at the Guichard, making his debut with the club still in Ligue 2. After being a regular after Les Verts' promotion back to the top flight, he then made the move to Chelsea in January, where he featured only sparingly. Now, a move back to France, to play in a midfield which just lost two key pieces in Andrey Santos and Habib Diarra, is an ideal opportunity for him to once again experience regular top-flight football. This, coupled with manager Liam Rosenior's already impressive reputation for polishing young talent, make Alsace an ideal destination.
