Robin Risser has joined RC Lens from RC Strasbourg

RC Lens officially announced the arrival of Robin Risser on Friday. Here's a closer look at this young goalkeeper, a product of the academy at RC Strasbourg Alsace, who made his mark last season at Red Star.

Alsatian through and through

Born in Colmar on December 2, 2004, Robin Risser (20 years old) started his football career at FC Bennwihr, then played for SR Colmar, before joining the Racing Mutest Academy, the training center of RC Strasbourg Alsace, in 2017. Regularly a top player with the French youth teams, this son of winegrowers signed his first professional contract in September 2021. He then joined the first team as Matz Sels' backup before going on loan for the 2023/24 season.

Loans to Gain Experience

Faced with stiff competition in Strasbourg, Risser left to seek playing time. In July 2023, he was loaned for a season to Dijon FCO (National), where he established himself as a starter, playing 30 matches. Returning during the offseason, he embarked on another loan, this time in Ligue 2 BKT. At the end of November 2024, he discovered the second division with Red Star, going on loan as a medical emergency. He had a great half-season there: 19 matches played, 23 goals conceded, 5 clean sheets, and made a valuable contribution to the club's survival.

Promising Statistics in Ligue 2 BKT

Last season, Risser was the second-youngest goalkeeper to play in Ligue 2 BKT, behind Ewen Jaouen (USL Dunkerque). He posted a save rate of 74.16% in his 19 appearances, placing him fifth among goalkeepers who have played at least 15 matches. Furthermore, he conceded a goal for every 3.87 shots on target, a very encouraging performance for a first-year professional.

Seeking his debut in the top flight

While he has appeared 31 times in the squad with RC Strasbourg Alsace, Risser has yet to play in Ligue 1 McDonald's or the Coupe de France. His arrival at RC Lens could therefore mark his debut in the French top flight.

Missed performances with the French youth teams

A French U16, U18, U19, U20, and U21 international (14 caps in total), he was called up by Thierry Henry for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, a sprained left elbow sustained during the team's preparations forced him to withdraw. More recently, he also had to withdraw from the group stage of the 2025 U-21 Euros due to back pain.
