PSG’s Youth Players Play Vital Role in Luis Enrique’s Plans

Over the past couple of years, young talents like João Neves, Désiré Doué, and others have arrived to bring a new element to the Parisian squad. Even though the Ligue 1 McDonald’s champions have made this investment in these kinds of players, the PSG youth academy is also playing a significant role.

Warren Zaïre-Emery leads the charge for the academy players, and he’s even served as captain. Still, other names are slowly becoming Enrique’s go-to players when he needs to rotate and keep his squad fresh.

Despite the 2-1 loss to RC Strasbourg this past weekend, PSG did make history in the match. The capital club became the first team in Europe’s Top 5 to start a league game with four players born in 2006 or later: Warren Zaïre-Emery, Senny Mayulu, Axel Tape, and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Enrique spoke to PSG’s official website, praising the young players who were asked to step up in a starting role against a Strasbourg side that’s in a tight battle for a European competition spot.

“I think it was a very close game between two sides who want to play in the Champions League next season. We started the game with four Titis, so I think we played a very good game. We were put in trouble, but I have to congratulate the players. I’m very proud of the young players, they showed what they’re capable of. It’s not easy to play against this Strasbourg team. They have a lot of quality and experience.”

Mayulu has been the youth product outside of Zaïre-Emery that Enrique has leaned on the most this 2024-25 season.

The 18-year-old has made 32 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and two assists, with each goal coming in a different competition. Mayulu has scored in Ligue 1 McDonald’s, the UEFA Champions League, and Coupe de France.

Most of Mayulu's playing time has come in Ligue 1 McDonald's, with the teenager playing 680 minutes in 18 appearances. Mbaye is right behind Mayulu regarding playing time as the 17-year-old has racked up 246 minutes this season for PSG in France's top flight, recording one goal. He's also made one appearance in the Coupe de France for the Parisians.

Although Noham Kamara didn’t start the contest with the four other youngsters, he did play 45 minutes off the bench. The teenager told PSG’s official website the confidence it gives him and others to play with the first team.

“It was a fantastic experience, and it’s all down to hard work. I’m very happy with myself. The feeling is incredible, and the atmosphere in the stadium is magnificent. I’m one of the youngest players with Ibrahim and Axel. The coach guides us a lot and he’s a great coach with us.. That gives us a lot of confidence when we’re out on the pitch.”

Regardless of the newcomers, the PSG youth players will have a place in Enrique's plans heading into next season.
