Racing Club de Lens coach Will Still will be once again reunited with his former side as Reims travel up to Stade Bollaert to kick off the weekend's action in Ligue 1 McDonald's. It will be a test between two sides that are aiming to finish in different parts of the table: Lens look to be back on track to make a late attempt to seal European football, whilst Reims are still looking in deep relegation trouble sat 16th in the Ligue 1 McDonald's table.
Only a few weeks ago, four consecutive Ligue 1 defeats appeared to have extinguished RC Lens' hopes of securing a top-seven finish. Yet the Sang & Or have rediscovered their spark right at the perfect time, securing three wins from their last four matches to put themselves back in contention for European football.
Each of those victories came by a 1-0 scoreline - away at Marseille and at home to Rennes and Saint-Étienne - matching the total number of wins they had mustered in the previous 10 league outings combined. Now, with momentum swinging their way, Lens are eyeing a third consecutive home win in Ligue 1, something they haven’t achieved in nearly 18 months. Fittingly, that last streak also included a victory over their upcoming opponents, Stade de Reims.
"Reims was the club that allowed me to get started," recalled Will Still, now coach of the Sang et Or. "They have good people and in recent weeks the team has been extremely well organised, causing their opponents a lot of problems. They beat Marseille, they won in the cup, then they were unfairly beaten last weekend against Strasbourg."
Will Still's men currently sit ninth in the table, still five points adrift of the European places with just 18 points left on the table. It’s far from straightforward, but the situation is considerably brighter than it was earlier this spring.
