Today Olympique Lyonnais have announced the arrival of Argentina international Thiago Almada, who comes on loan from Brazilian side Botafogo. A winner with La Albiceleste in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Almada begins a new step in his career after representing Botafogo and winning the domestic championship as well as Copa Libertadores. He joined the club last June, becoming the most expensive signing in Brasileirao history.
This came after a spell in the United States with Atlanta United where he played 80 games, scored 26 goals and provided 24 assists. The No. 10 was named MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2022 and MLS Young Player of the Year in 2023. During the latter season, he also earned MLS Best XI.
Originally beginning his career in his home region, Almada first played for VĂ©lez Sarsfield in the heart of Buenos Aires. In almost four seasons, he played 100 games, scoring 23 goals and providing 24 assists before he made the move to MLS and Atlanta United. The rest, as they say, is history.
"Thiago Almada has similar qualities to Rayan Cherki or SaĂŻd Benrahma. He could bring an interesting technical touch to our game, which would be good news," said OL manager Pierre Sage when previously interviewed on the potential arrival of Almada at the club.
After the departure of Adryelson on loan to Anderlecht earlier today, the midfielder should be registered to play by this weekend when Les Gones face Toulouse in Ligue 1 McDonald's. Lyon do have business to contend with in the Coupe de France beforehand, however, facing Bourgoin-Jallieu in the round of 32.
