Olympique Marseille have closed the gap on Paris Saint-Germain in the Ligue 1 McDonald's table to just four points with a 2-1 win on Saturday night at Roazhon Park.
Rennes had their first real chance to take a 1-0 lead when VAR confirmed a handball by Michael Amir Murillo in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for the home side. Arnaud Kalimuendo stepped into the box to take the shot, but his right-footed shot to the bottom left corner was saved by GerĂłnimo Rulli.
The contest remained scoreless, but it wouldn't stay that way for long. Following his missed penalty kick, Kalimuendo redeemed himself by scoring in the 43rd minute to give Jorge Sampaoli and his team a 1-0 advantage.
Despite the early lead, it wouldn't last long for Rennes as Marseille scored two minutes later thanks to a goal from Mason Greenwood. The 23-year-old scored on a right-footed shot from the center of the box to make the contest 1-1 heading into halftime.
OM didn't take long to break the deadlock as Adrien Rabiot scored in the 49th minute off a header from the center of the box to take a 2-1 lead over Rennes and the scoreline would remain that way.
Following the away victory for Marseille, Pierre-Emile HĂžjbjerg spoke to DAZN and shared his thoughts on the squad as OM extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches across all competitions.
"It was a very difficult match. We were not at our best, but there are days when you have to play with your head. We worked well, we stayed united as a team. Rennes are still building, but they caused us difficulties. The three points feel good. One day at a time. We need to try to do things right during the week and on the weekend. The work remains the same."
OM will keep an eye on the scoreboard this Sunday, hoping PSG drops points in their match against AS Saint-Ătienne at Parc des Princes.
After saving Kalimuendo's penalty kick, Rulli became the first goalkeeper to save three consecutive penalties in Ligue 1 McDonald's since Predrag RajkoviÄ did so for Stade de Reims during the 2019-20 season.
