Recap: OM Start 2025 with Five-Goal Performance vs. Le Havre

Olympique de Marseille came out with their scoring boots for the first game of 2025 with their 5-1 win over Le Havre on Sunday night at Stade VĂ©lodrome.

In a span of 18 minutes, the home side jumped all over the visitors, scoring three three goals before halftime. The first goal came from Valentin Rongier, who scored on a right-footed shot from the box to the bottom left corner to take a 1-0 lead.

Marseille found their second goal of the match 14 minutes later courtesy of a goal from Bilal Nadir, who scored on a left-footed shot from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner, assisted by Quentin Merlin.

Four minutes later, Neal Maupay made the contest 3-0 with a goal in the 43rd minute as the 28-year-old scored on a header from very close range to the bottom right corner and Merlin recorded his second assist of the night.

In the second half, OM added two more goals with the fourth goal coming from Elye Wahi off an assist by Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old scored in the 66th minute off a right-footed shot from very close range to the bottom left corner to make the contest 4-0.

Ulisses Garcia added Marseille's fifth goal of the game in the 75th minute off an assist from Michael Amir Murillo. The 28-year-old scored off a right-footed shot from very close range to the bottom right corner to give OM a 5-0 advantage.

Le Havre did score in the 85th minute thanks to a goal from André Ayew in his return to Stade Vélodrome. The 35-year-old played for Marseille for nine years from 2007 to 2015, but the visitors' efforts came too late as the home side secured the 5-1 win.

After the match, Maupay spoke with DAZN and noted his happiness for Wahi to find the back of the net as it's a confidence booster for the young goal scorer.

"I’m happy for [Wahi] because it’s true that right now, I’m the one playing, starting the matches, and I’ve been in his position, and I would be too, so it’s tough to be on the bench. But he’s working hard and he’s a young player with huge potential, so I’m happy for him, it’s going to do him good."

The Stat: OM continues to find the back of the net

Marseille has scored at least five goals in three of their 16 Ligue 1 matches this season, which is the same number as in their previous 177 games in France's top flight.
