Norwegian Eirik Horneland has been appointed coach of AS Saint-Étienne on Friday, replacing Olivier Dall'Oglio, who was dismissed on December 14, announced the club, currently 16th in Ligue 1 McDonald's.
The 49-year-old Horneland had been in charge of Norwegian club SK Brann Bergen since 2021. He will conduct his first training session after the Christmas break on December 29. Laurent Huard, the director of the Saint-Etienne youth academy will be on the bench for Les Verts' round-of-32 Copupe de France clash against Olympique de Marseille, at home on Sunday.
Horneland replaces Dall'Oglio, who was dismissed the day after the Verts' 2-1 defeat at Toulouse, their third in a row and tenth this season (four wins, one draw). The Norwegian has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract running until June 30, 2027, with an additional option. His mission will be “ to put his experience, forged and recognized at SK Brann Bergen, to the team's advantage, to develop a performance culture and a style of play specific to ASSE," says the club's press release.
Having coached Brann Bergen since 2021, Eirik Hornland helped the club climb back into the first division, then led it twice (2023, 2024) to second place in the Norwegian league (Eliteserien), winning the Norwegian Cup in 2023. He was free after resigning at the beginning of December. He also coached the Norwegian U19 national team from 2015, before managing Haugesund from 2016 to 2019, then Rosenborg until his resignation in 2020.
The new Les Verts coach comes with his assistant, Moroccan-born former AS Monaco Norwegian defender Hassan El Fakiri, who has the advantage of being a French speaker.
