With Marseille hosting Riviera rivals Monaco at the Vélodrome on Sunday evening, we recount some classics between the two sides down the years.

Historically speaking, Marseille and Monaco have always entertained in their clashes over the years. It's also a tight contest between the two: Marseille have 15 victories whilst Monaco lead with 16 victories with 15 draws over the last 46 meetings between the two sides.

Marseille 2-2 Monaco: Ligue 1 (January 2024)

It was a feisty affair last time out at the Vélodrome between the two sides. Wissam Ben Yedder opened the scoring within the first ten minutes before Monaco's Maripan was sent off with a straight red card. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang equalised, before Maghnes Akliouche's strike saw ASM go ahead just after the half-time interval. Leo Balerdi then equalised in the 50th minute. Yet, OM couldn't make the most of it when Denis Zakaria was shown Monaco's second red card of the game, as Monaco held on for the point.

Monaco 3-2 Marseille: Ligue 1 (September 2023)

Gennaro Gattuso's first match as Marseille boss was an entertaining affair. Trailing twice, Monaco overcame OM to take a provisional lead in Ligue 1 in late September. Iliman Ndiaye opened the scoring in the first minute. Maghnes Akliouche grabbed an equaliser only 7 minutes later, before OM went ahead again via Samuel Gigot's header. A second effort from Akliouche saw Monaco level proceedings, before Folarin Balogun scored to put Monaco ahead in the game for the first time.

Monaco 2-3 Marseille: Ligue 1 (November 2022)

A last-gasp equaliser from Sead Kolasinac, a magnificent free-kick from Alexis Sanchez and a superb effort from Jordan Veretout saw OM come from behind to win against Monaco in 2022.

Monaco 3 - 4 Marseille: Ligue 1 (September 2019)

Pipa Benedetto's brace helped Marseille to a victory in a seven goal thriller at Stade Louis II. Trailing by two goals after a brace from Ben Yedder (17th, 26th), OM pulled off a fine victory over Monaco (3-4).A  4th-placed ON caught up with Rennes and Nantes. ASM finished the day 19th in Ligue 1.

Monaco 6-1 Olympique Marseille (August 2017)

In the midst of the turmoil surrounding the transfer of Kylian Mbappé, AS Monaco continued to do very well on the pitch. The Monégasques beat Olympiens 6-1 on Matchday 4 of Ligue 1 back in 2017. ASM are keeping pace with leaders PSG, with four wins in as many matches. Marseille had not conceded so many goals in the league for twenty years.
