Recap: Maghnes Akliouche Brace Fuels Monaco's Win Over Brest

AS Monaco secured a 3-2 win on Friday night in a tightly contested matchup against Stade Brestois at Stade Louis II.

Monaco got off to a fantastic start after Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring in the fifth minute to give the home side a 1-0 advantage, but the goal-scoring didn't stop there for Adi HĂĽtter and his team.

Aleksandr Golovin scored in the 24th minute. Monaco secured a 2-0 lead in under 25 minutes and there was more bad news for Brest along with the deficit of two goals.

Pierre Lees-Melou had to leave the match midway through the first half, a concerning moment for the veteran, especially after missing the start of the 2024-25 season while recovering from a broken fibula sustained last campaign.

After 45 minutes, Monaco headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead, but Brest would cut into this advantage early in the second half. Coming out of the break, Brest made the contest 2-1 thanks to a goal from Abdallah Sima in the 50th minute.

Brest recorded seven total shots in the final 45 minutes as they looked for the game-tying goal, but it wouldn't come. Akliouche scored in the second half stoppage time to give Monaco a 3-1 lead and the insurance goal proved crucial.

Éric Roy and his team scored in the second half stoppage time courtesy of a goal from Ludovic Ajorque, but there wasn't enough time for Brest to find the equalizing goal as Monaco secured the win and all three points.

After the match, Brest's Kenny Lala spoke to DAZN and noted the disappointment of this result, understanding that the team fell short of leaving with a draw.

"We need to take a hard look at ourselves because we gave up chances. We should have been more clinical in our own box and the opponent’s box. When things go wrong, you have to know how to tough it out. It wasn’t good enough."

Both teams will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League as Monaco face SL Benfica while Brest goes up against FC Barcelona.
