Auxerrre grabbed a huge win over Marseille at the Vélodrome to move up sixth in Ligue 1.

Friday's opening Ligue 1 clash of the weekend saw Auxerre stun Roberto De Zerbi's side .

Auxerre stunned Marseille at the Vélodrome to get their third straight win in Ligue 1, thanks to goals from Lassine Sinayoko, Gaëtan Perrin, and Hamad Traoré scored in a dominant first half for Les Diplomates. 74% of possession for De Zerbi's men couldn't get the job done, as Auxerre became the second team in a matter of weeks to inflict a 3-0 scoreline on the hosts at the Vélodrome - following a hammering from PSG in Le Classique.

Lassine Sinayoko opened the scoring, with Donavon Léon playing a longball and Brassier missing, and the Auxerre striker let the ball bounce and slotted past Rulli from the penalty spot (10').

Marseille tried to get back into the game, but they struggled to create any decent chances from their possession. Balerdi's poor pass was intercepted by Mensah. Auxerre then counter-attacked and Sinayoko was let loose down the left side. The OM defence is caught off guard, and Perrin dribbles past Rulli and finishes into the back of the net (43'). Only two minutes later, Hamad Junior Traoré would get another for AJA, this time Merlin losing the ball for Marseille. Perrin crossed to Traoré on the left, who stormed his way into the box and found the back of the net with a left-footed strike from a tight angle between Rulli's legs (45').

Vélodrome domination by Auxerre

The second half very much continued in the same vein, with Marseille pushing the away side to try and get back into the affair. Mason Greenwood managed to grab one back for Les Olympiens, squeezing past Léon with a low right-footed strike (67'). They huffed and they puffed, backed by a restless Marseille home crowd, but De Zerbi's men couldn't find a way back into the affair.

For Auxerre it's sheer jubilation. After a difficult start to the season back in Ligue 1, Les Diplomates have now secured their third straight win which has seen them rise to sixth place in the table.

MATCH REACTIONS

Adrien Rabiot - "Booing from the crowd, that's normal. When you're OM, you can't put in a performance like that at home. When we do well, they get behind us and push us, but they pushed us the whole game. In the end they're not happy, that's normal. We say it amongst ourselves, the coach knows it too, we deserve these whistles."

Djibril Cissé - “My role at Auxerre is to help the strikers work. I'm there once or twice a week. I've got a great group, and today we saw a terrific performance, even if my club was swaying between the two teams. I'm satisfied with the result."

THE STAT: NOT A HAPPY HUNTING GROUND

Marseille trailed by at least 3 goals at the Velodrome at half-time for the 2nd time in Ligue 1 2024-2025. Prior to this season, this hadn't happened to OM since August 1998 (0-4 v Montpellier, 5-4 final score).
