PSG opened the contest on the right foot as Warren Zaïre-Emery scored in the 14th minute as the home side took the advantage, but this lead wouldn't last long. Atlético de Madrid responded four minutes later with Nahuel Molina scoring in the 18th minute to level the scoring.
The two squads went into halftime leveled 1-1 as neither team could break the deadlock. In the second half, the Ligue 1 club recorded 15 total shots while the Spanish club countered with two, but it was Ángel Correa who scored the game-winning goal for the Spanish side to secure a 2-1 win for the visitors.
Following the loss, PSG captain Marquinhos spoke with Canal+ on what is surely a difficult result to digest considering it leaves the Parisians currently outside the qualifying places for the next round in the Champions League standings.
"We were confident; we had hope. But we let points slip away. We knew how important a win would be. We tried—our play is solid, we’re creating chances, making progress in some areas, but still lacking that finishing touch. These are the challenges of big matches. In Ligue 1, we might make mistakes and get away with it, but here, against top players, those mistakes cost us.
"Atlético’s approach was clear—they have a lot of experience. We had a strategy, but it didn’t work out. We need to stay calmer in front of the goal. Warren [Zaïre-Emery] showed that calmness. We controlled the game, had plenty of shots, and kept the play in their half.
"[On the goal conceded at the end] We had a corner, everyone was pushed up, and we weren’t well-positioned. They managed to counter. There are definitely things we need to improve. We’ll need to pick up some crucial points to qualify.
"Looking at the standings, we’ve played four games, three of them at home. Now we’ll have to earn points on the road. We’re PSG—if we need to go after points, we’ll do it. There’s no reason to throw everything away; it’s those final details that keep costing us."
PSG will have to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Stade Raymond Kopa to face Angers SCO. As for the Champions League, they will next take on another challenging opponent when they face Bayern Munich on November 26.
