Since Bordeaux's drop to National 2 (the fourth tier of French football), one man has been single-handedly at the rescue for Les Girondins in the 2024-2025 season. That man is former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll, who made the move to the club this summer from Ligue 2 side Amiens.
Les Girondins have struggled since the start of the National 2 season, remaining winless until mid-September. The arrival of the English veteran marked an upturn in form, scoring twice on his debut before scoring a consecutive brace a week later. This weekend, Carroll was once again on target in a 1-1 draw against Blois to save yet another point for FCGB. It makes it now eight points out of a possible 12 in their last four games that Carroll has earned for his side.
"A lot of players, recently retired or nearing the end of their careers, have asked why I'm playing here in France, away from my family," Carroll said to BBC Sport in an interview. "I'm just enjoying it here."
"I want to be part of this project," he stated, and perhaps play "another five years until I'm 40".
Les Girondins now sit 13th in National 2 after a rocky start to life, effectively having to reconstruct an entire new squad after suffering an administrative relegation from Ligue 2.
