Jonathan David is off to a fantastic start this 2024-25 season and establishing himself as one of the best strikers in Europe, not just Ligue 1.
The Canadian forward began scoring goals early in this campaign to help LOSC Lille qualify for the UEFA Champions League league phase. During the qualification phase, David recorded two goals and two assists as Les Dogues advanced past Fenerbahçe SK and Slavia Prague.
David’s goal-scoring form has carried over to Ligue 1, where he’s recorded six goals, tying him with Olympique de Marseille’s Mason Greenwood for second place in the league. Only Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola has more, with eight goals, putting him just ahead of the Lille star.
One of the 24-year-old’s most impressive matches so far this season was last month when he recorded a hat-trick against Le Havre. Following that match, Bruno Génésio spoke about what David means to the squad, understanding that the player brings more than just his goals.
“Jonathan David is an important player for us; we know that. He deserves congratulations. Scoring three goals in a match [against Le Havre], even for a forward, is quite rare. But even beyond his goals, he was very useful for the team, especially with his runs behind the defense and his defensive work in the second half to help make the team more solid.”
Lille currently sit in fourth place with 17 points, trailing second-place AS Monaco by three points and Ligue 1 leaders PSG by six.
LOSC put themselves in the title conversation with an impressive 2-0 victory over RC Lens in the latest Derby du Nord. David secured the win by scoring an insurance goal in second-half stoppage time.
The goal-scoring form for David shows no signs of slowing down in the Champions League league phase, highlighted by impressive goals in victories over Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. It's because of these results that Lille have six points and sit in the playoff qualification zone for the Champions League Round of 16.
David has also continued his goal-scoring form with Canada's national team, netting two goals and providing one assist in three friendlies. It wouldn't be surprising to see him play a key role when the Canadians take on Suriname in the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals this November.
