The contest didn't start the way that Lille had hoped as the home side secured a 1-0 advantage following a goal from Julián Alvarez in the eighth minute. Atlético would hold onto their advantage for the rest of the first half and head into halftime with the lead.
Lille didn't find their goal-scoring boots until halfway through the second half, but these goals came in bunches for the visitors. Edon Zhegrova leveled the scoring in the 61st minute to get the scoring started for Les Dogues.
Jonathan David, the hero against Real Madrid, again put on the Superman cap and scored a brace in 15 minutes. The first goal for the Canadian came in the 74th minute on a penalty kick conversion after Atlético's Koke fouled Benjamin André inside the box.
In a 13-minute span, LOSC went from being a goal down to having 2-1 advantage, and David added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to seal the victory for the away side. Lille have now won two Champions League straight matches, both coming against the Madrid-based clubs.
After the victory, Lille manager Bruno Génésio spoke to Canal+ about the squad's morale after these two wins as they now believe in being one of the clubs that automatically qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.
"We shouldn’t hold ourselves back, but we need to stay focused and grounded. We have a lot of upcoming matches in the league and European competitions, and our schedule is packed. We're dealing with several injuries, and unfortunately, [Rémy] Cabella is out again tonight due to injury. We really need to be strong. "
"We’ve taken a step toward potential qualification; I believe with 9 to 10 points, we can dream about making it to the Round of 16. We’re taking it one match at a time. This Saturday, we have a big derby against Lens, and I want to thank everyone for scheduling it on Saturday night; it’s fantastic..."
