The Netherlands came into the game on a positive note after having beaten Turkey in the quarter-finals, and they got off to the best start when Xavi Simons opened the scoring early in the 7th minute with a rocketed strike from outside the box. The former PSG man snatched the ball from the England defence and arrowed a strike into the far post, just out of the reach of Jordan Pickford.
Harry Kane almost found an instant equaliser, meeting a volley with a powerful attempt on goal which fizzed over the bar. Yet, the referee and VAR spotted an infringement on the England No.9, with Dumfries' following through on Kane's ankle and a penalty being rewarded.
Kane, in calm fashion, would step up to take the spot kick and drive the ball into the left corner - with Verbruggen only a fingertip away from saving. England would thus be level on the 18th minute. Dumfries would go and hit the post only minutes later, as Phil Foden struck from range and struck the post, in a breathless first period of the game.
The Three Lions would have a period of domination, which they kept up until midway through the second half, but the Dutch would get their own chances. Pickford saved well from Virgil Van Dijk at close range, before Gareth Southagate rang the changes. One of the substitutes, Aston Villa man Ollie Watkins, would have the final say in the semi-final.
The striker received the ball on the right side of the penalty area in the 90th minute and smashed a low driven effort past Verbruggen from what seemed an impossible angle. England qualify for the Berlin final, whilst the Dutch failed in heart-breaking fashion.
