Stade Brestois got back to winning ways after their heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last weekend (5-2) with a solid win over FC Nantes at Stade de la Beaujoire. Many consider the clash between the two sides as a local derby or Breton derby, but Eric Roy's men made the 300 km trip south to the Loire region with plenty of motivation to bounce back after suffering against the league leaders last week.
Roy's boy's opened the scoring against Les Canaris through their target man Ludovic Ajorque, who was found by a pass from Pierre-lees Melou following a set-up from a free-kick (7'). Nantes tried to find a reply, with Jean-Charles Castelletto's header threatening Marco Bizot but looping just over the bar. The hosts needed to push high up the pitch to threaten Les Brestois, but they were able to stand firm and show their strength at the right moments.
Bizot had to be strong himself to save from Mustapha Mohamed's strike, closing down the Egyptian striker just outside the box. By the second half, Nantes were looking likely to get the next goal of the game, as Moses Simon began to worry the Brest defence, passing between two defenders but stopped by Chardonnet right in his tracks. The changes would then be made for both sides, with Meschack Elia coming on for his Ligue 1 Mcdonald's debut.
Chrivella would be next up to go extremely close to equalising for the hosts. The Nantes captain is served well by Johan Lepenant after an interception high up the pitch, and strikes just wide after setting himself up on the edge of the box. Les Pirates held firm from the flying Canaris assault, and managed to go one better right at the death.
Brest managed to hit the hosts with a deadly counter-attack to deal the knockout blow for Nantes. Mama Baldé recovered the ball and managed to find Lees-Melou on the opposite side. The midfielder slid into the box and slotted the ball under Anthony Lopes to put the result beyond doubt (90+5').
