Alexandre Lacazette: Olympique Lyonnais' key figure and iconic goal-scorer

Lacazette came through Lyon’s youth academy and has spent half of his career with Les Gones, so scoring a goal in the derby adds to the veteran striker’s legacy with OL. Before the contest, the 33-year-old noted what it means to play in this matchup against their longstanding rival.

“When we heard they were going up to Ligue 1, it was an important date for us... We want to play this game and we’ll be ready on the big day. I’m excited at the idea of playing a derby.”

After giving OL supporters the victory and bragging rights over ASSE, Lacazette spoke to DAZN about the emotions of playing this crucial match, his first derby at Groupama Stadium.

“[Sunday], it was all about heart. This was my first [derby] at the Groupama, and probably my last. It makes me really happy and proud. We wanted the win. It wasn’t perfect, and it wasn’t the prettiest performance, but we’re happy with the result.”

“I took in all the energy, from my family and from the stadium. Having the supporters there [on Saturday] was amazing. And there’s a lot of confidence within the group to go out and get the win.”

Over the past 15 years, Lacazette has been synonymous with Lyon. After breaking through into the first team in 2010, the veteran goal scorer has appeared in 363 matches across all competitions for OL during his two stints, scoring 187 goals and recording 55 assists.

Lacazette’s goal production has given him legendary status for OL as he’s the club’s second all-time goal scorer behind Fleury Di Nallo (222). The striker has also lifted trophies with the Ligue 1 side, winning the Coupe de France in 2012 and the Trophée des Champions twice in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

The Frenchman left Lyon in 2017 to join Arsenal and proved to be a valuable player for the Gunners during his six years with the Premier League side. Lacazette scored 71 goals and recorded 33 assists in 206 appearances across all competitions for the London-based club.

As Lacazette enters the final years of his career, it's the perfect time to reflect on his journey and savor the moments he'll continue to deliver for OL supporters and all those who appreciate French football.
