CONMEBOL Roundup: Abner, Vanderson star as Brazil impress

With more than half of the matches played, CONMEBOL's 2026 World Cup Qualifiers continue to catch the eye. Argentina, led by former Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi, top the ten-team, group, but in a competition where only two sides of the eight (Chile and Peru) are cut adrift, the battle to secure a place in the tournament continued apace on Tuesday, and there were plenty of Ligue 1 McDonald's stars involved.

Another clean sheet was kept in Uruguay by Ecuador -- the visitors remain well-positioned thanks to another PSG defender, Willian Pacho and Jhoanner Chávez of RC Lens, helping them earn a scoreless draw. Argentina continued their relentless run through qualifying, with plenty of Ligue 1 involvement for the Albiceleste as well -- Lyon left back Nicolás Tagliafico started for the hosts, while Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rúlli featured in goal, with his club teammate Leonardo Balerdi an unused substitute.

Elsewhere in the competition, former Monaco defender Guillermo Maripán's Chile found itself on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat to Colombia, with another ex-Principality player, James Rodriguez, involved for the winners. In Paraguay, Toulouse FC midfielder Cristián Casseres Jr and Venezuela would take the lead, but were pegged back a brace from the hosts' Antonio Sanabria
